The unseen cost of service: Remembering the burdens carried in silence

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As November approaches and our communities prepare to pause for Remembrance Day, our thoughts naturally turn to those who serve and the ultimate sacrifices they and their families make.

In the wake of recent tragedies such as those at CFB Wainwright, the human cost of military service is brought into sharp, painful focus. Beyond the headlines and public memorials lies a profoundly difficult and often invisible ritual: the execution of casualty notifications, and the lifelong echoes carried by both grieving families and the service members tasked with delivering the news.

I’ve written a short piece reflecting on this silent burden, the true weight of remembrance, and the hidden sacrifices that rarely make the history books.

Drop the act, take off the mask, and let's lead with some actual substance. No tricks here—just real talk.

Stay steady (and watch out for things that go bump in the quarterly review),

Steve

For too many executives, Halloween isn't a single evening in October. It's a 365-day operating model. If your boardroom has been feeling a little fang-tastic lately, or...
